GILI AIR | Remember that song? Soooomewhere over the raaainbow… waaay uup high… wake up where the clouds are far behind me… where trouble melts like lemon drops… what a wonderfull wohoohooorld… oeehoeehoooee -Sigh- Welcome to Gili Air. We say: skip touristic Gili Trawangan and live love local life on Air. An idyllic island. So tiny, we easily strolled around it in one hour. Totally brought out our hippiness. Barefoot walks, rolling thru the white sand, leaning into a palmtree, paddling out, humming “what a wonderfull wohohooorld”. Our friend grew up on this island. He took us to Salabose. A handful of tropical bamboo bungalows on the beach at the south west of Gili Air. Owner Bapak (Sir) Arie gave us a warm welcome and an awesome rate of only 100.000 rupiah (8 euro) per night, including morning glory: delicious cheese toast and banana pancakes with honey and chocolate (we think Jack Johnson got his lyric inspiration from being here!). We enjoyed their lazy hang out: ‘the Titanic’. A wooden ‘boat’ in the sand. Everything you need is right there. At the right side: the beach. Behind us: the jungle. On the left: Zipbar. Saweet cocktails, good food and funny music (not to forget, the bardude is a hotty!). In front of Salabose it should be awesome surf. Jet, only when there is a big swell goin’ on. We were hoping for some good waves, but it wasn’t the right season. The months May and December are the best to bump into the best waves. A big we like for Gilli Air: rent a private boat for a snorkeling trip. You’ll swim around beautiful coral, funny fishes and big ass turtles!

How to get there from Bali:

Gili Air lies in between Lombok and Gili Meno. Meno is stunning, a great place to be for silence lovers. Than there is Gili Trawangan, Gili Air’s naughty party sister. Already a bit too touristic and backpacky we’d say. There are two ways to get to Gili Air. Take the speedboat “the Island get away” or for the adventurous readers: take your motorbike and hop on the local ferry. A crazy but beautiful trip true Lombok which will take you two hours to get to Bangsal bay, where the local boots are leaving to Gili Air (or Meno or Trawangan). The little boats are hitting the spots in the morning from 9 am and is ridiculously cheap. If you wanna be there as fast as possible: take the speedboat (sssht: contact us, we can arrange tickets for a special price).
